Spili is located south of Rethymno, about 30 minutes from the city, in the shade of Kedros mountain, at an altitude of 430 m. It is said that has acquired the name Spili (cave) of the many caves that surround it.

Spili is famous for its lots of water, and have counted 39 sources in the region, which are said to originate from Psiloritis mountain waters. Moreover, the famous sight of the village is the fountain in the main square, with 25 fountains in the shape of lion heads from which run crystal clear, cool water surrounded by tall plane trees. Taverns and cafes which are near, offer fresh water once have filled from the fountain.

Among the sights of the village include the traditional water mills that survive until today and are located in the E4 path, and the river, with the bridge Kamara or Spiliani Bridge, which flows throughout the year and is full of trouts. From there starts the Kourtaliotis gorge which ends at the famous Preveli palm forest.
